You're addicted.
Here's how to stop it.
Doom scrolling, porn, cocaine, gambling, erotic novels (yes, it’s a thing).
I’ve watched it ruin wealth, careers, and love.
So here’s what to do.
From a now-recovered gay porn addict.
Just kidding… I haven’t recovered.
Do I have your attention?
That’s what this is about.
Attention.
And everyone is taking it from you,
but the things that really matter.
How this has anything to do with financial advice?
This email will save you the subscriptions and “digital detox” courses.
They work, but this is the cheat sheet.
I’m also on a mission to reduce my consumption, as I’ve started posting again on social media, so naturally I’m spending more time than I need to.
Step 1 - Watch this.
I’ve pinned the video to save you time.
If you’d like the worksheet I’ve created for myself. Here you go.
(I buy a coffee instead of making tea. You do you.)
Step 2 - What exactly are you avoiding?
Don’t think too deep.
It’s actually the first thing that comes to mind that just made you feel weird.
The thing that you shouldn’t be procrastinating.
This is important, as this is where you might revert after you’re done with your list.
I’d like to preface that if this thing is crippling, speaking with a professional, adviser, friend, or someone suitable might be better than a piece of paper.
Step 3 - Block your apps / websites on your phone using OPAL.
Not Sponsored.
Spend some time here.
Create some rules around what your morning looks like.
What do you need off at work?
What’s your wind-down look like.
Step 4 - DO NOT CONSUME ANYTHING NEW.
This is something I’m doing alongside you. I’ve become an addict.
A save / watch-later addict.
Bookmarks. Lol. I haven’t opened things from 2024.
Go look at your saved Instagram section.
FUCKING WILD, RIGHT?
Now your Watch Later on YouTube.
You could probably consume just that for a whole year.
Set up a folder system. Everywhere.
Nostalgia.
Things to implement.
I want to buy…
Whatever works for you.
Step 5 - Consume with purpose
Slowly work through the content you wanted to watch before.
Delete, label, or action it as you work through it.
No more than 30 minutes to 1 hour a day.
Step 6 - Then stop.
For at least 24 hours a week.
No consumption.
Don’t be shit.
Step 7 - Repeat 1 - 6
Do this until you’ve worked through all your saved content / Watch Later.
You will delete things, and the temptation of scrolling into something new will be there.
Get serious.
The world is waiting for you, and it’s not in front of your screen.
If your “One Thing” is working on your finances,
we can dedicate 1–3 hours to make the money anxiety go away.
